4 Tips for Dating During the “New Normal”

In order to help flatten the curve during a global pandemic, you should always follow safe social distancing protocols and consciously focus on protecting the health of those around you—but it doesn’t mean you can’t find love! Dating during an era of distanced communication can be tricky, but if you’re open to new experiences and getting out of your comfort zone, you might be surprised who you meet.

1. Embrace the New Normal

We know that wearing a mask isn’t your number one fashion choice, and small talk about taking your temperature isn’t the most exciting topic, but choosing to prioritize the health of the people you meet should be your first focus!

Changing your mindset around these small precautions can set the entire tone of your future relationship. If you’re choosing to protect others, your date will likely follow suit. If you do intend to have physical contact, normalize talking about getting tested for COVID and staying in self-quarantine beforehand, if possible.

2. Check Your App Upgrades

Did you know that a majority of popular dating apps have made adjustments to accommodate for quarantine? In June, Bumble released video chat and voice call features to compliment your match experience, while keeping your personal information safe. Don’t feel like exchanging numbers just yet? Set up a quick video call first to check compatibility, get to know your match better and talk about your expectations in the online dating experience.

In addition to these new communication tools, Tinder rolled out the “Passport” feature, allowing users to connect with other singles, regardless of distance. Elie Seidman, Tinder CEO, shared in response to the update that they, “hope our members, many of whom are anxious and looking for more human connection, can use Passport to transport themselves out of self-quarantine to anywhere in the world.”

3. Try Something Outside the Ordinary

Falling in love over the internet isn’t a new idea, but there might be a few places you’re not looking—and online gaming might be one of them! In fact, a recent survey of gamers found that one out of every three respondents had met their significant other or a close friend while leveling up! Even further, 34 percent of respondents said that building relationships was their favorite part of gaming.

If you’re already getting online with your friends, consider using this opportunity to get to know other individuals who share your same interests. While you might not always find your perfect match, you’ll likely build the network of people you know!

4. Stay Safe

While we’ve already talked about your physical safety, it’s very important to talk about your digital safety as well. As you use digital tools to find love, remember to guard your personal information against malicious behavior. Trust your gut, and if you feel a situation is suspicious, cease communication and share your experience with a trusted friend or family member should you need help. Don’t be afraid to do your research and learn tips from trusted resources on how to recognize red flags.

Your new adventure to find love will be exciting! Be patient, and above all, remember to love yourself first. When you appreciate who you’ve become, others will see that confidence and send it back to you. Good luck!
