What to Wear to the Kentucky Derby (Or Your Best Derby Party)
If it were up to us, The Kentucky Derby, happening this Sunday May 5, would be declared a holiday. What’s more American than donning gigantic hats and fancy dresses, sipping bourbon cocktails, and cheering wildly for running horses with men strapped to their backs?
Okay, plenty of things, but you get our point. The Kentucky Derby is a storied spring tradition, not to mention one with it’s own dress code. To keep off the sun and impress fellow race-goers, ladies accessorize with ever more festive hats and fascinators. The fun of dressing up for the race has spread beyond the Derby grounds, giving even those of us thousands of miles away a chance to get gussied up for watching parties and themed get-togethers.
So, with mint julep (or another classic cocktail) in hand, what exactly does a stylish lady wear to the Derby or one of its spin-off parties? We say, try traditional with a twist, a la Kate Middleton. (Definitely not American, but we have to admit she aces race day style.) An A-line dress or breezy skirt paired with a lady-like jacket will help you achieve that perfect mix of polished and playful.
