Who could forget the wedding scene from The Graduate? Dustin Hoffman (Ben) bangs on the glass inside the church shouting for Katherine Ross (Elaine), and they escape running side-by-side as he holds her lace dress. Reality sets in as they settle into that city bus, Simon and Garfunkel play and the credits roll.
There are so many iconic wedding scenes that we’ll never forget, for better or for worse. Despite its (temporarily) tragic outcome, will we ever forget Carrie Bradshaw’s epic Vivienne Westwood gown from the first wedding scene in the Sex and the City movie? Or the sweet and simple long-sleeve shift Ali MacGraw dons for the civil ceremony in Love Story?
While it’s true that Annie Banks’ very 1990s, elaborate lace confection from Father of the Bride may not feel exactly right for the modern bride today, she can still take inspiration from this classic movie wedding and others, too, when looking for her perfect dress.
Perhaps a more low-key ceremony invites something like the sleeveless dress Claire Danes dons to marry Leonardo DiCaprio in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet. A more bohemian bride might be inspired by Mama Mia! and Amanda Seyfried’s lush layers of tulle. The modern-yet-classic women need look no further than Julia Roberts in Runaway Bride or Reese Witherspoon in Sweet Home Alabama.
