Go-to workout outfit
“If I’m going to SLT, I love wearing my Michi Pipeline Pant with my Electric Yoga Seamless T-Back Tank, Shashi socks and my L’Urv Lacquer Eclipse Jacket to throw on after to meet my friend for a green juice at Juice Generation.“
“For Soul Cycle, I need very breathable clothing so I love my Electric Yoga ¾ Seamless Blue Capris with my Lucas Hugh Elite Mesh Bow Tank. I love throwing on the bow belt after spin to give my sweaty tank a bit more shape.”
Essential beauty products pre or post workout
“Peter Thomas Roth Powder Mineral Sunscreen. You just dust on your face like blush! It’s great to put on post sweaty workout when you’re running errands and might be exposed to the sun.”
It’s not always easy to get motivated for the gym. But the promise of wearing a cute workout outfit certainly can soften the blow. If you thought Lululemon had cornered the market on fashionable gym gear, you must not be familiar with Carbon38.com—the chic woman’s answer to what to wear to the gym.
Founded by former professional ballet dancers who left their careers in the finance and corporate worlds to pursue careers in fitness, Katie Johnson and Caroline Gogolak, the site offers a well-curated selection of the most stylish athletic apparel.
What truly sets Carbon38 apart is its tastemakers section. Following the trend in combining content with commerce, Johnson and Gogolak invite strong women who lead active lives (think everyone from Cynthia Rowley to the girls at Dannijo) to share their story—and provide a little shopping inspiration.
Now that our beach days are numbered we need some new motivation. So we caught up with Gogolak as she prepares for the site’s relaunch this September to talk fitness tips, favorite workouts, and what to wear to the gym.
LM: Do you think what you wear affects how you work out? CG: Yes! Absolutely. Some workouts focus on abs, so you need clothing that will accommodate that movement. I personally love the Michi waistband and find that it’s great for core work. On the other hand, some workouts are really sweaty and you need clothing that’s moisture wicking and breathable, which is why I love Electric Yoga leggings.
LM: What fitness brand should have on our radar? CG: Some of our favorites include Vie Activewear, Beyond Yoga, Splits 59, Suki Shufu and so many more!
LM: Do cute gym bags exist? CG: I typically use a Goyard bag for the gym. You can wear it to and from the office so it’s both professional and practical.
LM: What’s always in your gym bag? CG: 1 liter of Smart Water, my Super sunglasses, Electric Yoga White Mesh Jacket, Nars Satin Lip Pencil in Lodhi, Apple headphones.
LM: Essential beauty products to use pre- or post-workout? CG: Peter Thomas Roth Powder Mineral Sunscreen. You just dust on your face like blush! It’s great to put on post sweaty workout when you’re running errands and might be exposed to the sun.
LM: Which fitness craze are you obsessing over? CG: I’m really into the thinking at the Viva Mayr Clinic in Austria. They teach that you should eat a big breakfast and lunch, but have a very small dinner no later than 6pm with no raw vegetables after 4pm to improve digestion. I feel amazing and have so much energy.
LM: What’s your favorite juice brand? CG: Pressed Juicery--I love Greens 6--or Kreation in LA.
LM: What’s your favorite healthy recipe? CG: Cold asparagus soup. Take 1 onion, 4 cloves of garlic, asparagus, fresh English peas and vegetable broth. Heat all ingredients in a pot and blend.
LM: What’s the best fitness advice ever given or received? CG: Focus on getting enough sleep.
LM: Any tips for sticking to your workout routine when you travel? CG: Bring a yoga mat and practice with I.AM.YOU. yoga videos on your laptop. You get an incredible workout while staying balanced.
