Getting dressed in January is one of the great challenges we face as humans. We’re looking for style in a hopeless place. It’s hard enough to pull yourself together for work and day-to-day affairs, but a date? Please—you might as well give up on pairing romance and fashion until the April thaw. Unless, that is, you happen to have a few tricks up your down parka sleeve, which we do.

When putting together a date night outfit when it’s freezing out, layers are your best friend. If you want to wear a dress or skirt, start with tights and opt for ankle boots instead of pumps. Your silky blouses and tanks are still the perfect complement to jeans or even slouchy leather pants, just be sure your coat is extra warm. And if you’re worried about looking like a lovelorn marshmallow on your next mid-winter date, find a warm coat that has a belt or cinches to define your waist.

Don’t let your love life or your sense of style go into hibernation this winter. Grab a man, make a plan, and try one of these hot date night looks for cold weather.
