If Nicole Chavez isn’t a name you know, you’re probably familiar with her work. The celebrity stylist is responsible for the fashion choices of Rachel Bilson, Scarlett Johansson, and Catherine Zeta-Jones just to name a few. And if you were a fan of The OC (who wasn’t?!), that fashion-conscious style you loved of Marissa Cooper’s (or maybe you preferred the bohemian vibe of her friend Summer) was Chavez’s work. The stylist got her start as a costume designer on the set of the show—which has how she met Bilson, who became her first client. And in the world of celebrity fashion, it’s less about who makes your dress and more about who styled your look. So it was only natural that those stars who admired Bilson’s style (and the positive attention it was getting) soon joined Chavez’s roster.
Sure, styling members of the A-list is enough to keep anyone busy—especially if you’re as good as Chavez is (Forbes magazine named her one of the “Top Ten Superstar Stylists”). But the Los Angeles-based tastemaker’s work has also appeared in some of your favorite fashion magazines (InStyle, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar among others), she lends her expertise as a designer (with Bilson) at Shoemint and she’s gone digital as reFINEstyle’s Style Editor. Oh, and she’s also a mom.
In our latest edition of Closet Confidential, we managed to score some time with the uber-successful and insanely-busy Chavez to find out exactly what influences her personal style. From her favorite fashion-inspired movie moment to why she advocates making the unexpected fashion choice, see what she had to say in our exclusive interview below.
