I’ve been excited for fall since the first ankle boot hit stores a few weeks ago. And while many of you are mourning the impending end of summer, I’m counting the days until I can start wearing my chunky knits and leather pants. Now there are some women that prefer to wait until the cold weather starts to set in to shop for their fall wardrobe. If that’s you, you’re missing out on shopping the uber-wearable and staple-heavy pre fall season—or in other words, the fashion world’s answer to the buy now, wear now dilemma.
What is pre fall? Put simply, it is the fashion collection that delivers to stores after summer and before fall. To help us (and you) make the most of this shopping opportunity, we’ve turned to fashion expert Rachel Zoe for some style advice. From what pieces to invest in now to which trend she’s most excited to wear this fall, we’ve got the scoop on all things pre fall.

Lifestyle Mirror: What exactly does Pre Fall mean? Rachel Zoe: Pre Fall is a smaller, more item-driven collection that bridges the gap between the larger spring and fall collections. It’s all about pieces you can buy and wear now and throughout fall.
LM: How does this collection differ from what a designer shows on the runway for fall? RZ: Pre Fall is great for transitional pieces—clothes that will take you into the next season. A structured trench coat with special details, for example, can be worn on a late summer evening as well as a rainy day in fall.
LM: Are there specific pieces that are best to buy at this time? RZ: Pre Fall is the time to buy pieces that have long-term appeal—jackets that you want to wear now as well as in the winter, and dresses you will wear both with and without tights.
LM: What items can I buy now and wear now? RZ: I love a neutrally-colored leather mini dress that you can wear with or without tights. Not only is it perfect on its own with a pair of gladiator flat sandals, it’s a great item to layer in the winter. Pair it with your favorite silk menswear blouse and a pair of knee-high riding boots or leather booties.
LM: What should you splurge on? Save on? RZ: Splurge on a great transitional jacket, like a stretch cotton twill trench with leather sleeves—something lightweight enough to wear over a t-shirt on a summer night, but also a piece you can layer and wear as the weather gets a littler cooler. Wait for the fall season to buy your investment pieces. Save for the perfect riding boots and winter coat.
LM: What’s on your Pre Fall shopping list? RZ: Always Hermes…I’m obsessed with the So Kelly bag in black croc!
LM: What trend are you most looking forward to wearing for fall? RZ: Leather trousers all day long! I am so excited for pony hair details and slouchy knits. I just want to be really cozy in the Fall.
LM: What trend is best left on the runway? RZ: Stay away from acid wash denim and graphic printed leggings…I think those moments have passed.
LM: Whose collection are you most inspired by? RZ: Vintage YSL, Chanel, Courreges, and Halston, are just some of the collections that will always inspire me and influence how I design.
