Call it Hollywood Prom. Call it the Super Bowl of fashion. Or, just call it the 86th Annual Academy Awards, coming up on March 2.
We're already chomping at the bit, ready to devour every red carpet choice. But what is judgement without a little context? Before we can fully assess the gown choices of the 2014 Oscars, we should look back to the red carpets of Oscars past—to remind us of the couture that came before.
We gathered 20 of the best red carpet moments of the Oscars from the past fifteen years or so, starting with Gwyneth Paltrow's "arrival" in 1999 in Ralph Lauren, and ending with Naomi Watts' fierce Armani Prive gown from 2013. Also in the mix are unforgettable looks from Michelle Williams, Julia Roberts, Halle Berry and more. We don't really want to play favorites, but it's hard to imagine two more perfect (and perfectly suited) looks than Michelle Williams marigold Vera Wang (in 2006) and Cate Blanchett's architectural Givenchy (in 2011).
