Throwback Thursday: Pablo Picasso & How To Wear Stripes
Though you may not think of him this way yet, Pablo Picasso is an old master at more than just art. The Spanish painter, who spent most of his life in France, definitely had that je ne sais quoi when it came to style. I most appreciate the way he can show guys how to wear stripes.
He caroused in Paris with Gertrude Stein in the early twentieth century, as part of the art crowd that frequented the cafes and boites of the Montmartre neighborhood. He had wives and lovers, many of whom were much younger than he, which leads me to believe that perhaps Pablo Picasso’s style was also influenced by a younger crowd.
In famous images of the painter, you see him at home or in the studio wearing the classic French Breton stripe shirt. It was a look that came into fashion in France thanks to the Navy, and then Coco Chanel.
The appeal of the navy-and-white shirt has always been a duality of trendy and classic. Seeing iconic figures like Picasso wearing it gives it a feeling of nostalgia and authenticity— a timeless piece for any generation. As with most timeless pieces, you can wear it year-round and with anything from shorts to jeans to chinos, but we love it best in the summer.
Shop our favorite striped shirts for guys below— just in time for summer. Wear them with anything and see if you channel some of Picasso’s creative fire. (Or perhaps his way with the ladies…)
“My mother said to me, 'If you are a soldier, you will become a general. If you are a monk, you will become the Pope.' Instead, I was a painter, and became Picasso.”
