The first time I heard the term “summer sweater,” it was a guy friend of mine inquiring about a package I had just received in the mail from my mom, containing a white Ralph Lauren cable knit sweater. “Got your summer sweater I see,” he said. All I could say was, “I guess I do!”
There’s no exact science to knowing how to wear a sweater in the summer. It should mostly be sufficient to say: Only when you need it. I envision a summer sweater as that crewneck or that cardigan you can casually throw on when a breeze picks up out at Cape Cod, or the one you throw over your shoulder when you set out for an afternoon sail on a breezy day. (Vivid imagination, I know.)
The thing is, the summer sweater is inherently casual. Sure, to me it brings to mind some seriously preppy daydreams, but perhaps that’s only because the coast is the only place that seems like it gets a breeze in July (certainly not here in the heart of New York City…). You can wear one just about anywhere if the temperature calls for it, boat or no boat.
Here’s another secret of this lightweight knit: women love a summer sweater. (See the proof here.) Whether you wear it over your short-sleeved button-up shirt or paired with colorful shorts, the ladies will surely want to cozy up to they guy in the sweater at your next beach bonfire.
Now that you’ve gotten your fill of fantasy scenarios, shop these summer sweaters that you can wear in real life scenarios, too. Places like the office, traveling by train or plane, or during an evening stroll on the boardwalk… Wait, there I go again…
