Known for his East Coast effortlessly put-together style, Michael Bastian may be the single go-to authority on how to wear shorts for summer. So, we decided to turn to the 2011 CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year and ask his advice on the best practices for dressing up a pair.
“A nice button-down shirt, a blazer, a good belt and dress shoes can really take shorts to a whole other level,” says Bastian. And while your choice of shoes, he says, may be negligible, “You should avoid socks at all costs.“ If the occasion requires that you step it up a notch Bastian offers a hint: “I've seen chopped off shorts worn with a tuxedo jacket and formal shirt (no tie) and it looked amazing..."—Sasha Levine
