Today it was announced that our current cover girl, Georgina Chapman will make her directorial debut with a short film produced for Canon. Along with Jaimie Foxx, James Murphy, and devout Marchesa fan Eva Longoria, Chapman will work with famed director Ron Howard on a series of curated shorts inspired by independent photography submissions. They’ll all premiere next year at what’s said to be the world’s first photography-inspired film festival, titled Project Imaginat10n. Chapman has yet to create the finished product, but she’s excited about what’s to come, telling WWD, “Whether it’s going through libraries or taking a photo myself or taking stills from movies, my reference is a collection of photographs. So it’s a very natural transition for me to do this project, because that’s how I work as a designer.
This is Cannon’s second round of consumer collaborations with Howard in the mix. Last year he enlisted daughter Bryce Dallas Howard to help direct the short film When You Find Me as part of Project Imagina8tion, which pulled inspiration from eight winning photographs. This year, the winning lot will increase to ten.
And while Chapman may be deeply entrenched in the film industry thanks to scion husband Harvey Weinstein, but this will be her first foray into the world of moving image. “When I first told him, he laughed. I’m now waiting for him to come home and say he’s going to do his first collection,” Chapman joked of her husband’s first reaction to the news. —Misty White Sidell
