Happy Almost Birthday to E! Channel Star Joan Rivers
Happy 80th birthday to Joan Rivers, the E! Channel Queen of Mean
Joan Rivers, the original Queen of Mean is celebrating her 80th birthday this Saturday, and we couldn’t be more thrilled.
While most 80-year-olds are being spoonfed mashed carrots, this comedic veteran is still making celebrities who are a quarter her age rethink their red carpet outfit choices.
Born as Joan Molinsky to Russian Jewish immigrants, Rivers adopted her stage name with the hope of going big in showbiz. After studying at Connecticut College between 1950 and 1952 and then graduating from Barnard College in 1954, she supported herself by working in rundown Greenwich Village coffee shops and giving tours at Rockefeller Center until her first big break on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1965.
Rivers quickly became a household name, taking an unwelcoming industry by storm while mocking a time period that still widely attributed the microphone to men. Decades later, Joan Rivers is known for her biting commentary—directed at both herself and anyone else up for grabs. But it’s the former, her brand of self-deprecating humor, that’s been adopted by many female comedians who have stepped onstage since Rivers paved the way.
In honor of the comic’s birthday on June 8th, we’re sharing some of our favorite quotes by one of the most vocal performers in show business. In the meantime, shop around some of our favorite Joan Rivers merchandise.
