Pope is one tough woman—but that doesn't stop her from getting (flawlessly) emotional from time-to-time. "The Kevyn Aucoin mascara holds up really well for crying. We use waterproof mascara for swimming scenes, and for shower scenes we usually use L'Oréal."
"It's always fun when someone is going to a gala or special event because we give ourselves license to pump up the look. Mellie Grant on the way to Fitz's birthday gala really stands out—we got to have fun with her and think outside the box for her normal look in the White House. We used a fabulous Chanel eyeshadow palette in Smoky Eyes to create just that—a smoky eye. We used a bit of Trish McEvoy Liquid Face Color in Shade 1, a pretty coral wash, to enhance the cheeks and kept the lips a neutral Bobbi Brown mix of Crystal Pink and Nectar. Unfortunately, the President was shot... so we didn't get to enjoy our gorgeous new look on Mellie Grant for long!"

Kerry Washington Makeup
The Makeup on ABC's Scandal
How to Get Kerry Washington's Makeup Looks from ABC's Hit TV Series "Scandal"
Here's one of the only non-beauty questions we'll ever ask: If you're not watching ABC's Scandal, then why do you even bother having a tv?
For those who don't know, Kerry Washingtonplays Olivia Pope, a "fixer" in Washington D.C. who is entangled in a steamy affair with the also-incredibly-steamy President Fitzgerald "Fitz" Grant...and therein lies the irony. Dreamed up by the one-and-only Shonda Rhimes (see: Grey's Anatomy), the show also features lover's quarrels between a gay Republican (more irony!) Chief of Staff and his husband who desperately wants a baby, regular spats involving filandering and/or cheating politicians (and their wives), and even a high-stakes hostage situation in the White House. In short, this show is insanity on a whole new level.
And you know what else is totally insane? The beyond beautiful cast.
Enter Denise Hooper, the makeup department head for the television series, and Sheri Knight, the key and Kerry Washington's artist. Olivia Pope is armed with fierce instinct, and so are these ladies... when it comes to makeup. Washington literally glows onscreen, right alongside the positively radiant, effortless-looking actresses Katie Lowes (Quinn), Darby Stanchfield as Abby), and Bellamy Young (Mellie Grant). With every close-up—and there are many—one inevitably gets bona-fide skin envy.
"The series takes place in Washington, D.C., so of course we take that into consideration. We were instructed to make the women pretty but natural, with the idea that they don't have a lot of time to spend in front of the mirror." In other words, they're supposed to look a lot like every other woman in the world. (If only we all had Kerry Washington's skin, right?)
"In broadcast, the colors are turned up, so we adjust our colors to the eye. Just as the camera can add five pounds, our initial idea of the makeup could get altered as well. Plus, the show is shot in HD, which means everything shows up, including pores or any strong color. That's why we stay pretty neutral with our palette."
It's no surprise at all, then, that questions were being fired via Twitter to and from Washington's team and the ABC Scandal handle, asking what lip colors she was wearing, or what eyeshadow she uses. So Denise ingeniously started her own handle—@ScandalMakeup—and, more recently, her own Pinterest. This way, she could connect directly to the fans who admired her work. We can all get in on the Scandal.
We'll have to wait until April 25th for the series to continue (Shonda Rhimes, you tease) but in the meantime, click through the slideshow above to find out what makes the cast stay hydrated, glowing, and naturally radiant all year round.
