THROWBACK THURSDAY: BRIGITTE BARDOT
As you know by now, it's Cannes Film Festival time. And while we celebrate our current favorite stars—Miss Carey Mulligan included—it's impossible not to think of the beauty that epitomizes the crystalline waters of the South of France: Brigitte Bardot.
In an interview with CNN, Bardot described the "spirit of Cannes" in five words: "Dream, glamour glitz, international, artificial." On her first-ever trip there, she shouted, "Hello men!" to the crew of an American airplane carrier. A group of sailors responded by carrying her around in triumph, shouting, "Briget! Bridget!"
"They had no idea who I was because I was nobody."
Some fourteen years later, Bardot exploded into the French bombshell we now know. "In 1967, it was far less funny. The crowd and the press were hysterical, and hustled me, crushed me, and abused me... That was 40 years ago, and I've never been back."
Bardot is such a fascinating character—now an animal rights activist and a pseudo-xenophobe—she's a living icon, frozen in the 1950s. We constantly reference her "kitten eye" and gravity-defying bouffant, still captivated by her seductive beauty. It's interesting how we've frozen her in time (quite like Marilyn) despite the fact that she's still alive.
