There’s nothing like freshly dyed locks straight from the salon. But like any good investment, it's well-worth protecting. So we turned to co-founder of ColorProof Evolved Color Care, a luxury hair care lined designed exclusively for color-treated hair, Jim Markham for some expert advice.
From when to make your holiday hair color appointment to tips on keeping your hair color vibrant all season long, Markham shares his wealth of knowledge. See what he had to say in our interview below then shop some of our favorite products for color-treated hair in the slideshow above.
How far in advance should you color your hair before the holidays? The holidays are the busiest time of year for most salons and for good reason. With all of the parties and gatherings of friends and family, everyone wants to look their best. Be sure to book early and schedule an appointment to have your hair colored within one week of your first big event to ensure the color is just right. You may also want to schedule a salon blowout the day of your big event for salon-perfect-style.
Does hair color need time to “settle” in order to get the right shade? Waiting for hair color to “settle” is definitely not necessary. Hair color is at its shiniest and radiant when you first leave the salon. Discuss your ideal color with your professional colorist prior to your color service (bring pictures!). A licensed colorist will have the skills and know-how to prepare and apply the perfect formulation that will give you the color you desire. In order to keep your hair looking salon-fresh and vibrant following your service, we actually recommend waiting 24-48 hours to wash hair to eliminate residual oxidation and allow the cuticle adequate time to harden. This will ensure you lock in that vibrant, brilliant color.
What are the best ways to ensure long-lasting color? When you do wash, it is imperative to always use professional-grade hair care products designed specifically for color-treated hair, such as ColorProof Evolved Color Care. Shampoo and condition with sulfate-free, salt-free formulas, like ColorProof’s CrazySmooth™ Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Condition to gently cleanse and restore without disrupting the cuticle, allowing your color to remain vibrant and radiant though the holidays and beyond.
